How we measure your Analytics

Podigee Analytics are IAB certified. By following that industry standard, we create reliable and comparable Analytics reports.

Basic Principles

To provide you with accurate download metrics, we log every single HTTP request made for your audio files on our servers. We use these logs to calculate IAB-compliant download and listener numbers, which are then displayed in Podigee Analytics.

Our logging process anonymizes listener data by never storing the full IPv4 address from an HTTP request. Additionally, IPv6 networking is disabled on our audio delivery systems.

Measurement Window

We use a static time window for counting downloads.

Daily Download Aggregation

Our primary time window is a fixed 24-hour period based on the UTC time zone. Each day in your Podigee Analytics begins at exactly 00:00 UTC and ends at 23:59 UTC.

Using a static window provides clear, distinct daily metrics. This makes it straightforward to analyze multiple podcasts's performance and compare data day-over-day without the complexities of a rolling timeframe.

Hourly Download Aggregation

We also offer hourly Analytics, which operate on a fixed one-hour window. It's important to note that because of this, a single continuous stream that spans across the top of the hour (e.g., from 1:50 to 2:10) may be counted as a download in both hourly blocks. Consequently, the sum of your hourly downloads for a day might be slightly higher than the total number shown in your daily analytics.

Auditing

To ensure ongoing compliance with industry benchmarks, Podigee's Analytics pipeline is subjected to a minimum of two audits annually: internal self-audits and one formal external audit by the IAB.

Unique Handling

We identify uniques using two primary pieces of metadata: the device's User Agent and its IP Address. Based on this, we calculate two different metrics: Unique Downloads and Unique Listeners.

Unique Downloads

A Unique Download is counted when an entity, identified by the combination of its User Agent and IP Address, makes one or more valid requests for the same episode's audio file. As long as these requests meet the IAB's measurement guidelines, they are consolidated and counted as a single Unique Download for that specific episode.

Unique Listener

A Unique Listener is identified by the combination of their User Agent and IP Address. When a Unique Download is recorded, it is attributed to that specific listener. A single Unique Listener can generate multiple Unique Downloads by requesting different audio files (e.g., listening to several different episodes).

Managing Exclusion Lists

We implement filtering to remove automated, non-human traffic from bots and data centers. This crucial step ensures your analytics are accurate and reflect genuine listener activity, giving you a true measure of your audience.

Our exclusion lists for filtering are re-validated frequently.

We perform IP based filtering using inclusion lists built from the published IP ranges of major cloud providers, including Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure. These lists are automatically updated on a monthly basis.

We use a device's User Agent to identify and exclude download from known bots. We do this by checking against both our own private list and trusted, public blocklists that are standard in the industry.
